Serving The Shield is a national chaplaincy organization carrying forward a vision established in 1775 by George Washington: place trusted chaplains alongside those facing the realities of danger, trauma, and public service. Nearly 250 years later, that mission continues among the men and women of law enforcement and fire agencies.

Today, our chaplains serve as “Ambassadors of Hope,” walking alongside Police Officers, Firefighters, and their families. Serving The Shield is passionate about Serving Those Who Serve Us by providing a safe and confidential place where healthy and proactive conversations can occur, trusted relationships can develop, and personal resiliency can be strengthened.

Serving The Shield currently has more than 250 chaplains impacting over 150 law enforcement agencies and collaborating with more than 70 fire agencies. Our vision is bold: to embed trained and trusted chaplains into every police and fire agency across the United States.

Preventative Care Through Trusted Relationships

The most important work often happens long before the difficult day. Chaplains show up, listen, and build relationships through the everyday realities of the profession. When critical incidents occur—including line-of-duty deaths, violent crime, officer-involved shootings, suicides, serious injuries, and family crises—the chaplain is not a stranger entering the room, but a trusted presence who has already been walking alongside those they serve.

Our chaplains intentionally build trusted relationships and provide a safe, confidential environment through the Ministry of Presence. We show up. We listen. We build relationships. We walk alongside responders through the everyday realities of the profession.

Our emergency responders deserve the highest level of care. Serving The Shield is part of a growing national movement committed to ensuring that no responder is forgotten and no responder is left behind.

The Need

As Serving The Shield expands from regional influence to national impact, our organizational structure must grow with the mission. We need resources to establish state leadership, strengthen regional coordination teams, and support critical incident responses. An operational fund will help provide the leadership and infrastructure required to serve agencies consistently and effectively across the country.

We also seek leaders who are connected locally, regionally, and nationally to advance the chaplain movement, build relationships with like-minded organizations, and recruit talented people who share a passion for supporting emergency responders.
