Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing

Serving the Shield: Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing

There are moments in ministry when you can’t help but step back in awe of what just happened. Last week, our annual RMPFC (now “Serving the Shield”) Conference was one of those moments.

Chaplains, leaders, and servants from across the country gathered as ONE TEAM with ONE PURPOSE—to strengthen and sharpen chaplaincy for the sake of serving those who serve us. There was encouragement, unity, wisdom exchanged, and a clear sense that God was at work in ways far beyond anything we could have planned or orchestrated.

And that’s exactly the point.

When something powerful happens, there’s a subtle but very real danger: we begin to take ownership of what only God could do. We start to think in terms of our conference, our impact, our growth. But the truth is, if God doesn’t move, none of it matters—and when He does move, He alone deserves the credit.

Scripture keeps us grounded in this reality:

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” — Psalm 127:1

“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” — 1 Corinthians 3:7

These verses remind us that we are participants, not the source. We are vessels, not the power.

As we reflect on last week, the call is simple but critical: keep the main thing the main thing.

The Apostle Paul gives us a direct challenge in this:

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” — Philippians 2:3

This is the posture that keeps our chaplain hearts aligned. Humility guards us from drifting into self-importance. It reminds us that everything we do is for His glory and for the good of serving our emergency responders.

And moving forward, that must remain our focus.

We pray, we prepare, and we serve faithfully. So, keep stacking those chairs, keep picking up brass, and keep those drinks cold or hot while stopping by the fire house.  As we continue the work of chaplaincy, may we keep Christ at the forefront of everything we do—giving Him the credit, trusting Him for the results, and staying faithful to the calling He has placed on our lives.

Because in the end, if He is not first, we’ve already missed it.

Thank you for Serving the Shield and thank God for all that He is doing.
